Wahab Leslie Foot
1933-2007
Ayesha Foot, Wahab’s wife of fifty-two years, wrote, “Wahab felt called to train for the priesthood. After ordination he returned to teaching, taking services on Sundays in the parish church. In 1987, he had his first encounter with the Dances of Universal Peace in the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey and realised he could worship in words from many traditions. The following Easter, he was initiated by Pir Vilayat into the path of Sufism. This caused a reaction from the bishop who decided, however, that he ‘should not frustrate the working of the Holy Spirit.’
In late 1999, he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and started chemotherapy. He remained cheerful and positive during successive courses of treatment. In the last couple of years he was no longer able to dance, but loved to welcome the group afterwards and offer his special flapjack. The parish church was full at his funeral, with friends from all walks of life and several traditions, reflecting his openness to all.”_
